It is time to
engage in Love.

Three rooms, three vibes, one house. We do not seat you across from a stranger for two minutes and ring a bell. We teach you how to make a real connection in under a minute, starting with the one thing nobody practices: how to give a compliment and how to receive one.

The compliment method

A connection is built in the first sixty seconds.

Most speed dating hands you a name tag and a timer. We spend the first part of every night teaching the four moves that make a stranger feel seen, then you practice them all evening long.

Giving a compliment is a skill. Receiving one without deflecting is a harder skill. Learn both and you will never sit through an awkward date again.

Taught at every event

Hosted by Dawn Weir, author of Dawn Compliments the World. The room warms up together before anybody sits down to date.

  1. Notice

Look for the choice, not the feature. Anyone can be told they have nice eyes. Almost nobody gets told the thing they decided on purpose.

  2. Name it

Say it plainly and say it once. Specific beats flattering every time, and it gives the other person something real to answer.

  3. Receive it

No deflecting, no joke, no returning it out of politeness. Take the compliment, hold it, then ask them something back.

  4. Engage

One question that cannot be answered with yes or no. That is the whole trick, and it is why our rooms sound different from every other speed dating night.

How a night runs

Two and a half hours, and you will know exactly who to call tomorrow.

6:00

Meet and greet

Doors open. Grab a drink, get your card and your seat number, and say hello. Nobody stands alone at the bar on our watch.

6:30

Intro and special guest

Dawn takes the mic, the room loosens up, and our special guest for the night gets their moment.

7:00

Learn how to engage

The compliment lesson. How to give one, how to take one, and how to open a stranger in under a minute. Everybody practices out loud, together.

7:30

Start your hearts

Speed dating begins. Timed rounds, card in hand, host on the floor. You never have to end a conversation yourself.

8:30

Love and a gift bag

The rounds end, the gift bags come out, and the room stays open. Stay and mingle. Keep connecting. That is what the night is actually about.

Tomorrow

Call, do not text

You wrote their number on your card, so call it. By the end of the night you will not want to text them anyway, you will want to hear their voice. Ask how they are. Listen to how they say it. Then make a real date.

The calendar

Next night: Thursday, October 8.

Your host

Dawn Weir

Dawn hosts every night personally, with a microphone in her hand and twenty years of reading a room. She is a stand-up comedian, she has been on Netflix, and she has built a long, successful run of radio shows about relationships. If she can hold a comedy club, she can hold your nerves for one evening.

She is also the author of Dawn Compliments the World, which is where the compliment method comes from. She built these three nights on one idea: people are not bad at dating, they are out of practice at being kind to a stranger's face.

Come once and she will know your name. Come twice and she will already have somebody in mind for you.

Alicia Murillo

Alicia works the floor while Dawn works the mic. She is the one who spots the person sitting quietly at the end of the table and gets them talking before they even notice it happened.

Outgoing, warm and impossible not to like, she genuinely loves people and she genuinely loves love. She will remember what you told her in round two and bring it back up at the bar.

Between the two of them, nobody leaves one of our rooms feeling invisible.

From the room

I have been to four of these in this city. This is the first one where the conversation actually started before the bell.

Marisol · PrimeTime

The compliment thing sounds corny until you are doing it. Then you realize nobody has said anything like that to you in a year.

Devin · Now or Never

Easiest room I have ever walked into. Nobody was performing and I left with three numbers.

Sponsorship

Put your brand in front of a room full of single people who are paying attention.

Venues, dispensaries, spirits, salons, jewelers and matchmakers. Gift bag placement, table branding, the banner at the top of this site, and a live mention from the host on the microphone. Every guest leaves with a gift bag, so your product goes home with every one of them.

What a sponsor gets
  • Your product in every guest's gift bag
  • Table branding on the night
  • The banner at the top of this site
  • A live mention from the host on the microphone
Safety and respect

Everybody in this room is somebody's whole world.

Men and women both. Women get warned about dating and men get told to toughen up, and neither of those is good enough. Men are hurt by partners too, men are pressured too, and men are welcome here exactly as they are.

Our rules are short. Be kind, be honest, take no for an answer, and expect the same back. Anybody who cannot manage that gets walked to the door by the host, and we do not argue about it.

Meet in public, twice

First date and second date both in a public place. This goes for men as well. You are allowed to be careful.

Tell one person

Where you are going, who with, and when you expect to be home. Share your location with a friend for the evening.

Your own ride, your own drink

Arrive and leave under your own steam. Watch your glass being poured. If it leaves your hand, get a new one.

Tell the host

If anything feels wrong, say one word to Dawn or Alicia. We will move you, reseat you, or remove them. No explanation needed.

Trust the feeling

You never owe anybody a second date, a reason, or a conversation you do not want to be in. Leaving early is always allowed.

In an emergency

Call 911. Domestic violence support for anyone, any gender: 1-800-799-7233. Crisis and suicide lifeline: dial 988.

Questions

Before you book.

Do I have to smoke at 420 SpeedDating?
NO. Big no. Nobody is ever handed anything at our events. 420 SpeedDating exists to connect people who do not mind if the other person smokes: the smoker who is tired of being judged, and the non-smoker who honestly could not care less. Smoke, do not smoke, both are completely welcome in that room.
Will there be LGBTQ nights?
YES. Sooner than you think. Love is love, the method works exactly the same, and those nights are already being booked. Get on the list and you will hear about them first.
How do you match people?
We do not email anybody a list. You get a card at the door and you write their number down yourself, the way people did it before the apps ruined everything. The next day you call. Not text. Call. Ask how they are, find out when they are free, and make the date. Then do it again, and again, until you are down to that one special person and nobody else.
What if they say no?
Then you got your answer in one phone call instead of three weeks of wondering, and that is a win. Use the call-back tip Dawn teaches and rejection stops stinging. Not every connection is a forever love. Plenty of them are a forever friend, and you can never have too many of those.
What if I have never done this before?
Neither has most of the room. That is exactly why the lesson comes before the dating. By 7:30 you will have already said something kind to a stranger out loud and lived to tell about it.
What should I wear?
Dressed-up casual. Dress like you are going to a job interview, because that is what this is: an interview to become personal with somebody. Show up as the version of you that you like best.
What does it cost?
Free to reserve your seat, then $30 cash at the door. Bring cash. Paying by card at the door costs you more, and nobody wants that.
How many people will I meet?
Twelve to fifteen in one night. Timed rounds, host on the floor, and you never have to be the one who ends a conversation.
Can I bring a friend?
Please do. Book together, arrive together, and we will still seat you apart. You came to meet somebody new, and your friend already has your number. We want you to tell someone you want to meet. Do you like several women or men? Invite them all. It is the perfect setup to make a date.

Engage in Love.

One list for every night. Save your seat for Thursday, October 8 at Bentley's Bar, and you will hear first when the next nights open.
